President Droupadi Murmu visited the 9.02-km-long Atal Tunnel in Rohtang on Wednesday during the second day of her three-day visit to Himachal Pradesh. Governor Kavinder Gupta and Lady Governor Bindu Gupta accompanied the President.
Located at an altitude of more than 10,000 feet above sea level, the single-tube highway tunnel received a traditional welcome from local residents at its north portal.

Gupta said the tunnel reflected India’s technological capabilities and commitment to connecting people living in remote and difficult geographical regions. He added that such infrastructure projects not only improve connectivity but also create greater opportunities for development in remote areas.
During the visit, Murmu took a keen interest in the tunnel’s engineering and construction and was briefed on its technical aspects. She also viewed the surrounding Himalayan landscape.
Later, President Murmu and Governor Gupta visited the Hidimba Temple at Dhungri in Manali, where they offered prayers for the peace, prosperity and well-being of the people of the country.
Gupta also visited the Forest Rest House in Manali, where he participated in a plantation activity and planted a Ginkgo Biloba sapling. He emphasised the importance of environmental conservation and protecting the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
