The increase in toll rates at the Kangra toll plaza before completion of the National Highway work prompted concerns among residents, with Sub-Divisional Magistrate Dr Anjali Garg saying discussions with senior officials were underway to review the rates.
Garg said the administration had taken up the issue with senior authorities, including the project director in Hamirpur, and talks on a possible revision were continuing.
She said a state-wide survey was examining the provision for toll exemption within a five-kilometre radius. If similar exemptions were found at other locations in Himachal Pradesh, the authorities would consider extending the provision.
The SDM said owners of non-commercial vehicles could opt for monthly or annual passes. She set the monthly pass rate at around Rs 300 and advised commuters to use the available options until the administration made a final decision on toll rates.
Clarifying the administration’s role, Garg said toll plaza operations and rate regulation did not fall directly under the local administration’s jurisdiction and were handled by senior national highway officials.
She added that the administration raised the matter with the concerned authorities after it came to light and was officially notified through the gazette.
Commuters are awaiting a decision on the proposed rate revision and the possibility of toll exemption for residents living within a five-kilometre radius.
