Himachal Pradesh’s apple season has remained subdued this year, with around 1.23 crore boxes reaching markets amid unfavourable weather and lower production. Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi said the state government had proposed increasing the procurement rate under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) from Rs 12 to Rs 13 per kg, subject to Cabinet approval.
Negi accused the BJP of spreading confusion over the scheme, saying the MIS procurement stood at around 13,000 metric tonnes this year, down from 79,000 metric tonnes last year.
He said the government had introduced an app to bring greater transparency to the procurement process. Negi also said the government had cleared Rs 114 crore in pending liabilities inherited from the previous BJP government, while total payments had exceeded Rs 262 crore.
The MIS procurement rate was last increased to Rs 12 per kg in 2023. The proposed hike of Re 1 per kg aims to provide additional relief to apple growers. The revised rate will take effect only after Cabinet approval.
